Straight PR verses Integrated PR

According to the book, The New Rules of Marketing & PR, traditionally PR and marketing were not converged. They were separate disciplines run by different people with separate goals, strategies and measurements criteria.

Today PR and marketing are no longer separate entities. The Web has changed marketing and PR to the new rules, which is the integration of the two. PR is no longer just a mainstream media audience and marketing is now more than just advertising. The integration of Marketing and PR means that marketers must shift their thinking from mainstream marketing to the masses to a strategy of reaching vast numbers of underserved audiences via the Web.

Integrated PR is not about social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter), nor about traditional media (TV, radio and print). It's about both.

  • Talking. Use the groundswell to spread messages about your company.
  • Engergizing. Find your most enthusiastic customers, and use the groundswell to supercharge the power of their word of mouth.
  • Supporting. Set up groundswell tool to help your customers support each other.
  • Embracing. Integrate your customers into the way your business works, including using their help to design your products.

The New Rules of Marketing & PR in my Career

The New Rules of Marketing & PR will be used in my career by making sure my news and resources are credible to gain loyalty from my viewers. Blogs, facebook and twitter will be a means of communication with viewers and to get feedback on what they want to see or read. The New Rules of Marketing & PR advises that advertising to a broad market is not as effective anymore, so my goal will be to reach a target audience.

News Reporting and Social Media

Social media will be a significant aspect of my career. I will use facebook to communicate with viewers about the news, twitter to keep viewers updated on news and blogs to speak on certain topics that I feel are important in the news.

Changing Careers

When I was younger I thought I was going to be a fashion designer and become the next Donatella Versace or Donna Karen. Then I though I wanted to be a beautician and after going to beauty school I realized that I didn't know what I wanted to do.

Growing up I always kept a diary or journal and made it a routine of recapping my day on paper before going to bed. This is when I realized that I enjoyed writing and decided to go back to college for journalism.

After taking a broadcast class I decided that I wanted to be a broadcast news reporter. I've chosen this career because I have a passion for writing and I enjoy meeting and interacting with new people. I wanted to do more than just sit behind a desk, and with a career as a news reporter I will be venturing out to different places within and outside the city.

Up Early

It's Labor Day and I've been up since 5:30 am. Five classess and an intern is wearing me out, but I can finally see the finish line. I've read so much this morning I'm starting to go cross-eyed. I have senioritis really bad. I'm not in the mood for this last semester, but I'm trying to snap out of it and get moving because I am walking across that finish line in December.
